Geothermal demand around Rochester correlates inversely with natural-gas availability. The towns where ground-source heat pumps actually get installed are the ones where the alternative is propane or fuel oil at $3.50+/gal — Mendon (Honeoye Falls), Canandaigua, Victor, Webster's east side, Scottsville, and the rural Genesee River corridor. Mendon in particular has long been a hot spot for ground-source installs in Monroe County, driven by the combination of large rural lots and the propane / fuel-oil fuel mix.

Natural-gas-served suburbs — Brighton, Greece, Henrietta, much of Penfield — have one-tenth the geothermal density.
